Ten Things to Remember at the Scene of an Accident

Ten Things to Remember at the Scene of an Accident

    1. Do not attempt to move the injured parties unless you are a trained Emergency Medical Technician.
    2. Do not move your motor vehicle unless ordered to do so by the police or the collision is a minor one and there is serious risk to you and others of further collisions.
    3. Call the police immediately.
    4. If there are personal injuries, call an ambulance immediately.
    5. Record the name, address, telephone number (work and home), driver's license number, license plate number and insurance information for all drivers and all motor vehicles involved in the collision.
    6. Record the name, address and telephone number (work and home) of every witness. A witness may be the occupant of another motor vehicle (including the driver and passenger) or a passerby, pedestrian or someone living or working in a nearby house or business.
    7. Make a written note of any admission made by the other driver or passenger. Examples- "It's my fault; "I'm sorry, I didn't look"; "I was hurrying to get to an appointment"; "I knew this car wasn't working right"; "The driver had too much to drink".
    8. Using your disposable camera, take photographs of the following:
    a. Scene of the collision.
    b. Damage to all motor vehicles.
    c. All skid marks.
    d. License plate and inspection sticker on all motor vehicles.
    e. Personal Injuries.
    9. Unless you need emergency medical treatment immediately, do not leave the scene until you and all other parties have exchanged insurance information and until the police dismiss you. Otherwise you run the risk of being charged with the criminal offense of leaving the scene of an accident. If you are still at the scene when the police arrive, cooperate fully with them and be prepared to give essential personal and insurance information.
    10. If you suspect that the other driver has been drinking or is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, be sure to notify other witnesses and the police. If there is evidence of such drinking (e.g. containers of alcoholic beverages in the other car) obtain photographs immediately.
